Calls to Strengthen Support for Ukrainian Children

On the fourth anniversary of the war in Ukraine, the League for Human Rights and the Office of the Commissioner for Children urged stronger systemic protection for Ukrainian children in Slovakia, warning that many remain in legal uncertainty. They highlight issues affecting unaccompanied minors, healthcare access and gaps in compulsory schooling. More than 41,000 children with temporary protection status are currently in Slovakia, with up to 3,000 estimated to be without parental care.

The Education Ministry says it is gradually adjusting legislation and support measures, including compulsory schooling for children with temporary protection and a new tutoring system at universities. Education Minister Tomáš Drucker (Hlas-SD) said Slovak schools have provided stability and safety to thousands of Ukrainian children, thanking teachers and communities for their solidarity.
