Emergency Power Supplies to Ukraine Suspended

Slovakia is halting emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine, a move Prime Minister Robert Fico (SMER-SD) describes as retaliation for the continued suspension of oil transit through the Druzhba pipeline. He says the measure will be lifted once Ukraine restores the flow, now expected on Wednesday, and insists it does not violate international rules.

However, European Commission spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen says EU law permits energy supplies to be cut only for technical or security reasons.

The governing coalition supports the step, while the opposition accuses the Prime Minister of endangering national interests and is considering legal action. Ukraine is Slovakia’s second-largest electricity customer after Hungary. Ukraine’s state grid operator Ukrenergo says the halt would not disrupt its system and that it has not received formal notice of any contract termination. Poland and Romania have indicated they could step in.
