Slovakia has joined Hungary in blocking the European Union’s 20th sanctions package against Russia at a meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels. Hungary had announced its veto in advance, while Slovakia’s official position has not been detailed.
According to reports, both countries linked their opposition to the suspension of Russian oil supplies through the Druzhba pipeline, which have been halted since late January. The new sanctions package, proposed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, targets energy, financial services and trade. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said talks with Bratislava and Budapest are continuing, stressing the need to maintain pressure on Moscow.
