Interior Minister Discusses Cooperation on Illegal Migration in Budapest

Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok (Hlas-SD) met his Hungarian counterpart Sandor Pinter in Budapest on Thursday to discuss deepening police cooperation in the fight against illegal migration and promoting the overlapping security interests of the Visegrad Four (V4) countries (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia). Other topics discussed included the protection of schools and cyber security.

"We discussed current security challenges following the end of the war in Ukraine, as well as growing threats in the area of cyber security. We agreed that cyber attacks on schools, public institutions, and land registries, which Hungary has also experienced, require closer international cooperation and the creation of a special platform for mutual communication between the relevant police authorities," said Šutaj Eštok.

The bilateral meeting with Pinter focused mainly on joint efforts to build security in the region. The ministers exchanged information on measures being implemented in connection with illegal migration on the so-called Western Balkan route.

On the issue of migration, according to the statement, both sides expressed identical reservations about parts of the EU pact on migration and asylum, particularly the section on solidarity, which Slovakia and Hungary rejected.
