Unless EU leaders send out a clear political signal from Thursday's informal summit in Belgium that the European Union will take action with regard to high electricity prices, the summit will be absolutely unsuccessful, stated Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) on a social network before the second part of the summit.
In his address, he intends to highlight the closure of primary aluminium production at the Slovalco plant in Ziar nad Hronom (Banska Bystrica region) due to high energy prices, and he also plans to speak in particular about what needs to be done to reduce electricity prices.
However, if such a political commitment isn't adopted at the the summit, Fico will consider this trip to be absolutely unsuccessful, ineffective and expensive. One of the solutions to reduce energy prices that he has proposed in the past is to suspend trading in emissions allowances.
