PM Meets EU Vice-President to Discuss Regional Support

Prime Minister Robert Fico (SMER-SD) met European Commission Executive Vice-President for Cohesion and Reforms Raffaele Fitto in Bratislava on Wednesday to discuss support for regions along the EU’s eastern border. Fico stressed that the Košice and Prešov regions, among Slovakia’s least developed, are directly affected by the war in Ukraine and could play an important role in its future reconstruction. The talks also covered a planned EU strategy and investment tool for eastern border regions, as well as the 2028–2034 EU budget.

They discussed revising Slovakia’s EU-funded programmes to redirect unspent funds into projects focused on competitiveness, the environment and housing. Fitto said cohesion policy must bring tangible benefits to all regions. On Thursday, he is due to visit EU-funded projects in Bernolákovo and meet Bratislava regional governor Juraj Droba and Mayor Matúš Vallo.
