Slovak MEPs clashed in the European Parliament over the rule of law, as the European Commission warned that Slovakia may be breaching EU legislation. European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection, Michael McGrath said reforms transforming the Whistleblower Protection Office violate EU rules and the Charter of Fundamental Rights.
The Commission launched infringement proceedings at the end of January, arguing the changes could undermine the office’s independence and safeguards. Although Slovakia’s Constitutional Court has suspended the law, Brussels has given the country until early March to respond. The Justice Commissioner also raised concerns about anti-corruption efforts and media freedom, while Slovak representatives remained deeply divided.
