Constitutional Court Refers STVR Law to EU Court

Slovakia’s Constitutional Court has turned to the Court of Justice of the European Union over a complaint challenging the law on the public broadcaster STVR. The judges have submitted several preliminary questions concerning whether the legislation complies with the European Media Freedom Act.

The questions focus on the procedure for selecting the director general and council members, guarantees of their independence from the executive, and safeguards for editorial independence. The court is also examining whether the creation of STVR — which replaced the previous public broadcaster RTVS — may conflict with EU law. The original complaint was filed by opposition MPs last summer.
