Slovakia’s Prosecutor General Maroš Žilinka has asked the Constitutional Court to declare the law transforming the Office for the Protection of Whistleblowers unconstitutional. In a submission delivered on Monday, Žilinka argues that the law was adopted through fast-track legislation and led to unconstitutional changes, including the termination of senior officials’ mandates and alterations to whistleblower protections.
The court suspended the law’s effect last December and is reviewing a complaint filed by opposition MPs. The legislation has also drawn criticism from the Public Defender of Rights, while the European Commission has launched infringement proceedings against Slovakia.
