Otto Šimko, one of Slovakia’s last living Holocaust witnesses and a direct participant in the Slovak National Uprising, has died at the age of 101 this night. His death was announced by the The Central Union of Jewish Religious Communities. Born in Topoľčany, Šimko escaped wartime deportation with the help of false documents and courageous assistance from others. In August 1944, he joined the anti-fascist resistance as a member of a partisan unit. After the war, he worked as a lawyer and journalist, becoming a respected voice of memory and moral courage.
