The majority of Slovakia’s population considers their country’s membership in the European Union to be beneficial. According to the latest Eurobarometer survey for the European Parliament, 60 percent of respondents in Slovakia stated this view, while the average across the EU stands at 62 percent. The strongest support for EU membership is among people aged 15 to 39. Among the common concerns of citizens are conflicts in their vicinity, energy dependence, migration, and climate change.
More than three quarters of Europeans (76 percent) and as many as 82 percent of Slovak residents expressed optimism regarding their personal future and the future of their families. Expectations are less favorable when it comes to developments in the world, in the EU, or in individual countries. Pessimism about the future of the world was expressed by 42 percent of respondents in Slovakia and 52 percent across the EU. A pessimistic view of the EU’s future is held by 36 percent of Slovaks and 39 percent of EU citizens. The future of their own country is viewed negatively by 42 percent of respondents in Slovakia and 41 percent of those surveyed in the EU.
Among the greatest concerns of Slovak residents are conflicts near the EU (65 percent, compared with 72 percent in the EU) and the Union’s dependence on energy supplies from third countries (55 percent, compared with 62 percent in the EU). Significant concern is also raised by natural disasters exacerbated by climate change (52 percent, compared with 66 percent in the EU) and the activity of drones from non-EU countries on EU territory (52 percent, compared with 60 percent in the EU).
In terms of societal development, as many as 68 percent of Slovak citizens (63 percent in the EU) fear polarization of society. Disinformation concerns 62 percent of respondents in Slovakia, while the EU average is 69 percent.
A clear majority of respondents expect the EU to play a more important role in the future in protecting citizens from global crises and security risks. This view is held by 71 percent of respondents in Slovakia and 66 percent across the EU. At the same time, most call for a more unified EU approach in crisis situations and a stronger voice on the international stage.
“Geopolitical tensions shape Europeans’ everyday sense of security. Citizens expect the EU to protect them, to be prepared, and to act together. That is exactly what a stronger and more self-reliant Europe must deliver. Europe is our strongest shield,” noted European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.
The Eurobarometer survey was conducted by the agency Verian in November 2025 in all 27 EU member states on a sample of 26,453 respondents, including 1,003 in Slovakia.
