Slovakia Faces Labour Shortage, Turns to Foreign Workers

Slovakia is facing a growing shortage of workers, including in low-skilled jobs. Economists say hiring more foreign workers will be unavoidable. Low birth rates and the outflow of skilled people are shrinking the workforce and may affect future public finances. OECD data show that by 2054, there could be about 63 people of retirement age for every 100 working-age residents. Some foreigners can already start work before permits are finalised, while Ukrainians with temporary protection have free access to jobs. However, some business leaders argue Slovakia should also focus on better conditions to retain domestic workers and young talent.
