Prime Minister Robert Fico met French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Thursday for talks covering a wide range of strategic issues. According to Fico, the meeting confirmed the close partnership between Slovakia and France, with discussions focusing on nuclear energy, defense and the war in Ukraine among others. In the area of nuclear energy, Fico said he plans to meet senior representatives of Électricité de France and Framatome, and confirmed his participation in a nuclear summit in Paris in March. Defence cooperation was also discussed in the context of a stronger and more self-reliant European Union. European competitiveness dominated the EU agenda, with Fico asking Macron to consider initiatives aimed at lowering electricity prices, which Slovakia plans to raise at a February meeting of the European Council. Macron later described the meeting as part of a “strategic awakening” focused on strengthening Europe’s unity, independence and resilience.
