President Backs Decision to Stay Out of Trump Peace Board

Slovak President Peter Pellegrini has welcomed the government’s decision not to join the new Board of Peace proposed by US President Donald Trump. According to the Presidential Office, the head of state considers the move appropriate.

The cabinet decided during its Wednesday meeting to remain outside the initiative for now. One of the main reasons is financial. Slovakia is currently unable to meet the required one-billion-dollar contribution due to ongoing budget austerity measures.

Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár (SMER-SD) said the decision was taken unanimously, while defence Minister Robert Kaliňák (SMER-SD) noted the initiative involves complex political and legal steps. The government stressed that Slovakia continues to support peace initiatives, but will carefully assess any new global security structures.
