Fedor Rosocha Appointed Slovakia’s UN Representative in Geneva

Fedor Rosocha will lead Slovakia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva, bringing thirty years of diplomatic experience with a focus on the UN. Rosocha previously served as Slovakia’s permanent representative in Geneva from 2009 to 2017, was ambassador to Serbia, and most recently was Director-General of the International Organizations and Human Rights Section at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár emphasized the importance of international cooperation under the UN as a cornerstone of the global order. “In times of deepening global crises and erosion of international law, protecting multilateralism and strengthening its institutions is more important than ever,” Blanár said. He added that “for Slovakia, strict adherence to international law is fundamental, and supporting it within international organizations is a priority of the government program,” noting Geneva’s key role as a center of multilateral activity.

The mission’s main tasks include maintaining a cooperative dialogue with UN member states, engaging other international actors, and ensuring Slovakia’s active and credible position. The mission also coordinates participation of Slovak representatives in meetings of dozens of intergovernmental organizations and contributes to forming the European Union’s common positions.

Rosocha intends to leverage Geneva’s multilateral environment to gain support for Slovakia’s bid to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2028–2029. “We aim to use Geneva’s specialized expertise to prepare for Slovakia’s future Security Council membership, support Slovak professionals in international organizations, and deepen cooperation, which is essential for advancing Slovakia’s candidacies to professional and governing bodies,” he said. He also highlighted disarmament agendas, pledging that the mission would continue to support initiatives to restart negotiations at the Conference on Disarmament, where he previously presided.

The mission will continue focusing on human rights protection and the enforcement of international humanitarian law, especially amid growing global crises. “We will maintain close dialogue with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, particularly regarding Ukrainian refugees in Slovakia. Key partners remain the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Organization for Migration, with which we will cooperate on labor migration to respond to Slovakia’s current workforce needs,” Rosocha added. Geneva hosts 39 international organizations and secretariats, including the UN Office in Geneva, the UN’s second-largest site after New York, with 187 of 193 UN member states maintaining accredited permanent missions there.
