Slovak Leaders Mark Holocaust Remembrance Day

On Tuesday, Slovak leaders marked International Holocaust Remembrance Day, remembering the victims of the Holocaust and warning against hatred and historical distortion. President Peter Pellegrini said the Holocaust must remain a lasting warning so that history is never repeated in such a cruel and inhumane form. He recalled the innocent victims murdered in the death camps created by a fascist ideology built on the idea of a “superior” human being. The President also warned against attempts to rewrite history and stressed the importance of preserving historical truth.

Prime Minister Robert Fico (SMER-SD) said the day is not only about remembrance, but also about rejecting Holocaust denial and condemning all forms of religious intolerance, hatred and violence. Prosecutor General Maroš Žilinka added that the suffering of six million murdered Jews must remain a lesson and a warning for future generations.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day was established by the United Nations in 2005. It is observed on 27 January, marking the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp by the Red Army in 1945.
