Prime Minister Robert Fico travelled to Brussels on Thursday, 22 January, to attend an extraordinary European Council summit focused on transatlantic relations. The meeting, convened by European Council President António Costa, was called amid recent statements by U.S. President Donald Trump related to Greenland.
Earlier the same day, Fico met Cuban Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Trade Minister Oscar Pérez-Oliva Fraga in Bratislava and announced plans to visit Cuba in 2026. He said Slovakia wants to involve Slovak businesses more strongly in economic opportunities created by Cuba’s reform measures, potentially accompanied by a large business delegation. According to the Slovak government, there are no unresolved political issues between the two countries, and both sides are interested in developing pragmatic and mutually beneficial economic relations.
