Slovakia Failing to Cut Obesity Rate, Adult Obesity Continues to Rise

Efforts to reduce obesity in Slovakia have failed, with rates among adults continuing to rise, according to a Report on the Implementation of the National Action Plan for the Prevention of Obesity for 2015 to 2025, which the government acknowledged on Wednesday.

The main objective of the action plans is to mitigate adverse obesity trends in Slovakia and contribute towards reducing the prevalence of excess weight and obesity. "An ambition that hasn't been achieved was to reduce the population obesity rate from 16.9 percent of obese people in 2015 to 15.8 percent in line with OECD recommendations. Instead, the rate stood at 16.8 percent according to the latest available Eurostat statistics from 2022," stated the Health Ministry as the submitting authority.

The report also refers to a Comprehensive Report on Developments in the Strategic Framework for Health Care for 2014 to 2030, according to which the obesity rate among adults has increased to 19.4 percent. By contrast, a slight decline has been recorded among children, with obesity now affecting 11.4 percent of boys and 10.3 percent of girls.

Several ministries were involved in implementing the measures, including the Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry, the Tourism and Sport Ministry and the Transport Ministry.
