In 2025, 76 books by Slovak authors were published in 20 foreign language with the support of the SLOLIA grant program of the Slovak Literary Center (SLC). "The most translated book in 2025 was Simona Smatana Čechová’s children's book Hovnivál.
Lucia Galdíková, manager of foreign projects at SLC explained that Slovak books were published, among others, in translation into English, German, French, Spanish, Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Serbian, Ukrainian and even Belarusian, Azerbaijani, Hebrew and Estonian. “Among the translated titles are award-winning works of fiction, suspense novels, debuts, contemporary poetry, books for children and young people and documentary novels,” she added.
In addition to Smatán Čechová, whose children's books were published in Spanish, Polish and German, Etela Farkašová recorded the most translations last year with translations into Serbian, Hungarian and Czech. The works of Pavol Vilikovský were published in translation into Serbian, Czech and Estonian.
“Among the authors translated into foreign languages were also Nicol Hochholczerová, Ivana Gibová, Jana Bodnárová, Lukáš Cabala, Tomáš Forró, Michal Hvorecký, Marek Vadas, Jana Micenková and Milo Janáč,” Galdíková announced.
The most translations - 12, among the works of contemporary Slovak authors were published in Czech, 11 translations concerned versions in Hungarian, and eight Slovak titles were translated into Polish and German.
The SLOLIA grant system was established in 1996 by the SLC. Its main goal is to support the publication of translations of Slovak literature abroad.
