The Boston Bruins have officially retired the No. 33 jersey of Slovak defenceman Zdeno Chára, honouring him as the 13th legend in the club’s history. The ceremony took place at TD Garden ahead of a game against Seattle and marked the culmination of a year in which Chára was inducted into multiple hockey halls of fame, including the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Chára captained the Bruins for 14 seasons, led the team to the Stanley Cup in 2011 and played well over 1000 games for the club across the regular season and playoffs. He became only the fourth Slovak-born player in NHL history to have his jersey retired and the 27th European overall to receive the honour. He finished his NHL career in 2022, holds the league record for most games played by a defenceman, and plans a farewell exhibition match in his hometown of Trenčín in 2026.
