A contract between Slovakia and US company Westinghouse on the construction of a new nuclear power plant could be signed in 2027, Prime Minister Robert Fico (SMER) said on Wednesday.
Fico is expected to travel to the United States later this week to sign an intergovernmental agreement that would allow Slovakia and the US to cooperate on nuclear energy. The agreement would open formal talks with Westinghouse but would not yet constitute a final contract.
According to the Prime Minister, Slovakia needs a new nuclear partner as continued cooperation with Russia is no longer realistic. "I would happily continue, but the world is crazy with hatred towards the Russian Federation. I don't harbour such hatred, but I am a realist," he underlined.Westinghouse currently offers a reactor with a suitable output for Slovakia’s needs. The cabinet also approved a proposal on US-Slovak cooperation for the Jaslovské Bohunice nuclear project.
