The main railway station building in Bratislava will undergo a complete renovation, Prime Minister Robert Fico announced on Wednesday after a government session focused on the development of the capital.
Fico said the state will be responsible for reconstructing the station, with Transport Minister Jozef Ráž (SMER) describing the project as a top priority. Renovation of the station’s social facilities is expected to begin this year. "We're about to sign the contract, and the project documentation for the [station building] reconstruction will definitely be contracted this year," Ráž announced, praising the fact that the ministry has been successful in finding money from EU funds for the planned purposes.
The revitalisation of the wider area around the station will be handled by Bratislava city council. Mayor Matúš Vallo welcomed the plan, stressing the importance of renewing both the station building and its surroundings.
