Prime Minister Robert Fico (SMER-SD) wants to restart aluminium production at Slovalco in Žiar nad Hronom, calling it a strategic industry for Slovakia. The plant has been idle for three years after soaring electricity prices, which jumped following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and made production unprofitable.
Fico also points to costly emissions allowances and is calling for a four- to five-year pause on carbon permits. He plans to raise the issue at EU level. Around 180 people still work at Slovalco in recycling, while the region awaits a full restart of production.
