Leaders Honor Štúr’s Legacy 170 Years After His Death

Slovak leaders have marked the 170th anniversary of the death of national figure Ľudovít Štúr, highlighting the lasting relevance of his ideas. President Peter Pellegrini said Štúr understood that a nation is built not only on territory, but on education, language, culture and shared values. He called people the country’s greatest wealth and urged respect for the Slovak language and culture.

Parliament Speaker Richard Raši (HLAS-SD) stressed that Štúr believed politics should serve the nation, not personal gain, recalling his role in founding the first Slovak National Council in 1848.

Ľudovít Štúr was the leading figure of the Slovak national revival in the mid-19th century. He codified the modern Slovak literary language in 1843, took part in the Slovak uprising of 1848–49, and served as a member of the Hungarian parliament representing the town of Zvolen.
