Slovakia’s state-owned gas company SPP has been ordered by the Supreme Court to pay so-called “Ducký promissory notes” dating back to the 1990s. The notes, worth 350 million Czech crowns, were signed outside official accounts by then SPP director Ján Ducký in 1998. Including interest and legal costs, the total reaches about 40 million euros.
The claim was upheld in favor of a Cyprus-based company, Stroden Management Limited. SPP rejects the ruling and plans an extraordinary appeal, which for now blocks enforcement. As SPP is state-owned, the cost would ultimately be borne by Slovak taxpayers.
