Slovakia and the United States will sign an agreement on mutual cooperation in nuclear energy on Friday, January 16, in Washington, with Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) planning to attend the signing, the premier announced Saturday after a lunch with President Peter Pellegrini and National Council Speaker Richard Raši (Hlas-SD). “In cooperation with our American partners, we want to build a new, large block entirely state-owned at the existing Jaslovské Bohunice nuclear power plant, with a capacity of nearly 1,200 MWh,” Fico said.
The prime minister noted that in December 2025 he received a written invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump for a joint meeting to support the intergovernmental agreement between Slovakia and the U.S. on nuclear energy cooperation. The Slovak government approved the agreement in September 2025, and it had previously been approved by the European Commission. The agreement focuses on collaboration in Slovakia’s civil nuclear power program, opening opportunities for joint work in modern technologies, research, experience sharing, professional training, and the involvement of Slovak industry. It also enables exchange programs between universities and other educational institutions and promotes research and development cooperation.
