Prime Minister Signals Focus on Bilateral Cooperation with Ukraine

Prime Minister Robert Fico has reiterated that Slovakia will not take part in any further war loans for Ukraine, but stated that Slovakia wants to maintain pragmatic and mutually beneficial bilateral relations with Ukraine and plans another joint meeting of the two governments.

Fico stressed that Slovakia will not supply weapons to Ukraine nor send Slovak soldiers there. He said the only conceivable role for Slovakia could be participation in monitoring a ceasefire or a future peace agreement. Fico also repeated his disagreement with the prevailing position of most European Union countries, arguing that continued financial support will not weaken Russia but instead prolong the war and increase the number of victims. According to Fico, a key condition for a post-war settlement would be Ukraine not becoming a member of NATO.
