Prosecutor General to Challenge Criminal Code Reform

Slovakia’s Prosecutor General Maroš Žilinka says he will ask the Constitutional Court to review the government’s criminal law reform. He argues the amendment may conflict with the constitution and has criticised it since the drafting stage, particularly the changes to criminal procedure. The reform reintroduces the “three strikes” rule for minor theft, expands offences linked to election interference and foreign influence, and criminalises denying or questioning post-war settlement documents. It also revises rules for cooperating suspects, known as whistle-blowers.

Justice Minister Boris Susko (SMER-SD) defends the law, saying it strengthens legal logic without weakening anti-corruption efforts. Opposition parties, however, warn it could protect organised crime.
