Slovakia is marking 48 years since it became an independent Catholic Church province. On 30 December 1977, Pope Paul VI issued decrees separating Slovak dioceses from the Esztergom archdiocese and establishing the Trnava ecclesiastical province. The move defined diocesan borders within Slovakia and made the country a distinct entity in church life. The decision followed years of complex talks between the Vatican and Czechoslovak authorities. Today, the anniversary is observed as a national memorial day, highlighting an important milestone in Slovakia’s religious and historical development.
