Christmas Puts Heavy Strain on Emergency Care

Christmas holidays are among the busiest periods for emergency departments and out-of-hours clinics in Slovakia. Data from the National Health Information Centre show a sharp rise in patients during December. Doctors most often treat respiratory infections, burns to hands and wrists, and serious injuries such as hip fractures.

In 2024, emergency departments recorded almost one million visits, with July and December the busiest months. December also brings more alcohol-related cases and injuries linked to fireworks. Paramedics say emergency call-outs also increase over the holiday period.
