President Peter Pellegrini held talks with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić in Belgrade on Sunday.
According to Pellegrini, Slovakia will always support Serbia on its path to the European Union. The president also highlighted the friendly relations between the two countries. In this context, however, he objected to the involvement of politics and behind-the-scenes games in the EU accession process, noting that he concurs with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) on this issue.
Pellegrini warned that if the EU continues its not always fair approach towards individual Western Balkan countries, their people may lose interest in EU membership.
The two presidents also spoke about global issues, stressing that maintaining peace not only in their neighbourhood but also worldwide is of the greatest importance to them. They also expressed their wish for the war in Ukraine to end as soon as possible. Vučić thanked both Pellegrini and Fico for supporting Serbia on its European path. On this occasion, Pellegrini invited Vučić for an official visit to Slovakia.
On Monday, Pellegrini was scheduled to visit the autonomous region of Vojvodina together with President Aleksandar Vučić, where a large Slovak community lives. The Slovak president was scheduled to meet almost two hundred representatives of official institutions, cultural associations, schools, media, and social and economic community life. Some compatriots view the visit positively, while others criticise it as symbolic support for the Serbian regime, which they say threatens the rights of national minorities.
