Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (SMER-SD) travelled to Brussels on Wednesday to attend the EU–Western Balkans summit and the subsequent European Council meeting. EU leaders will discuss relations with the Western Balkans, financing for Ukraine, European security, EU enlargement, migration, competitiveness, and the EU’s long-term budget for 2028–2034. Fico is expected to return to Slovakia by Friday.
Ahead of his departure, Fico told parliament’s European affairs committee that he rejects financing the war in Ukraine, including through frozen Russian assets, but allowed they could be used for post-war reconstruction. He said Slovakia is ready to help Ukraine bilaterally, for example with demining.
Opposition lawmaker Vladimíra Marcinková (SaS) warned that the European Council summit is crucial: if the EU fails to support Ukraine, it could lose funding by April, weakening its defense and bringing Russia closer to EU borders. She criticized Fico, saying Slovakia is taking the wrong side of history by opposing EU-backed support for Ukraine.
