Construction of the General Milan Rastislav Štefánik National University Hospital in Bratislava’s Vajnory borough officially began on Wednesday, with Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák (SMER-SD) and Health Minister Kamil Šaško (HLAS-SD) tapping the foundation stone. Šaško called the groundbreaking a crucial step toward creating a modern tertiary-care facility with advanced technology, expertise, and personnel.
The hospital is being built on Defence Ministry land and financed through the Recovery and Resilience Plan, two percent of defence spending, and partly from the public budget. The project was originally planned for the Razosochy site, later shifted to Ružinov, before finally selecting Vajnory.
The opposition has raised concerns over transparency and planning. Progressive Slovakia MP Oskar Dvořák said essential operational and medical details remain unclear, calling the project a marketing exercise. Igor Matovič suggested it could serve as a business opportunity for Defence Minister Kaliňák, citing rising costs per hospital bed, while KDH’s František Majerský criticized unresolved land issues and the neglect of existing hospitals.
