Prime Minister: I will not support the use of frozen assets to support the war in Ukraine

Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) will not support any scheme at the European Council meeting in Brussels, including the use of frozen Russian assets, which would lead to further support for the war in Ukraine. He announced this at a meeting of the National Council (NR) of the Slovak Republic's Committee for European Affairs before the European Council meeting, which is taking place on December 18 and 19.

According to him, he will not vote for a single cent that should go to support Ukraine. "In principle, I refuse to support anything tomorrow that would lead to money for war," Fico stated, adding that he will not support the use of frozen assets if they would lead to further support for the war in Ukraine.

"If this is to be part of a peace agreement, why are we going to throw it at weapons?" he asked, saying that he would support the use of frozen assets for an agreement on the restoration of Ukraine.

According to Fico, Slovakia is ready to help Ukraine on a bilateral basis. "We are ready to help them with mine clearance, in other areas," he added, adding that he is ready for further negotiations between Ukraine and Slovakia.

"We will behave as a solidary player on a bilateral basis," said Fico, adding that giving money to the war in Ukraine means prolonging it. The Prime Minister declared that the European Union does not have a solution to this conflict. If any country wants to, it can provide money to Ukraine for the war, according to Fico. "But there cannot be any European plan for the continuation of the war," he stated.
