The European Commission (EC) has expressed regret that the Slovak Parliament did not take the opportunity to thoroughly consult the legislation transforming the Whistleblowers Protection Office (ÚOO) into a new authority. The Commission said on Friday that it will now analyse the law and decide on further steps.
The EC raised concerns about several provisions of the legislation, echoing those cited by President Peter Pellegrini in his veto on Thursday, 11 December. These concerns relate to compliance with EU law and were communicated in a letter from European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law, and Consumer Protection Michael McGrath. “In particular, this concerns the abolition of the existing Whistleblowers Protection Office and the resulting premature termination of the mandate of its head,” the Commission added.
