Slovak PM Fico Opposes Military Aid for Ukraine

Prime Minister Robert Fico announced that Slovakia will not support any EU initiative to fund Ukraine’s military expenses, emphasizing that while Slovakia supports humanitarian aid and Ukraine’s EU membership, the conflict has no military solution. He criticized the EU’s current strategy as ineffective and supported peace initiatives, including those proposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Fico also addressed EU plans to ban the production and sale of combustion engine cars after 2035, stating Slovakia is working with other countries to ensure alternative powertrains, such as hybrids, remain allowed. He highlighted ongoing discussions with the European Commission and coordination with Germany, resulting in a joint letter urging flexibility in the automotive sector. According to Fico, these measures aim to protect Slovakia’s strategic and industrial interests while maintaining cooperation with EU partners.
