Slovakia Seeks Stronger Ties with Germany Across Economy, Energy, and EU Issues

Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár emphasized Slovakia’s interest in maintaining open dialogue and close long-term cooperation with Germany during a meeting with German Ambassador Thomas Kurz. Both agreed that bilateral relations are strategically important. Slovakia and Germany plan to deepen practical cooperation through an Action Plan for the Enhanced Dialogue 2026–2028, targeting foreign and European affairs and economy among others. Blanár highlighted continued engagement in the Slovak-German Reflexive Group for informal discussions on international and EU matters. The ministers also addressed industrial and energy competitiveness, including opposition to the EU’s combustion engine ban by 2035, and cooperation on LNG terminal capacity and renewable hydrogen transport. Germany remains Slovakia’s top trading partner and fourth-largest investor, with bilateral trade last year reaching nearly 38 billion EUR.
