Coalition Moves to Change Whistleblower Protection Office

The governing coalition has submitted its amendment to reform the Whistleblower Protection Office. The proposal would allow prosecutors to continuously review whether a whistleblower still qualifies for protection and whether the report was made in good faith. It also introduces new leadership from January 2026.

Opposition parties warn the move weakens whistleblowers. Progressive Slovakia (PS) says it targets investigators linked to Ján Čurilla and strengthens employers at the expense of people reporting corruption.

Meanwhile, the coalition is also struggling to agree on long-delayed ministerial dismissals. The opposition calls it a government crisis, while coalition partner HLAS-SD speaks about a possible cabinet reshuffle.

Update: Parliament approved the bill on Tuesday in a fast-tracked procedure. The current office will now be transformed into a new Office for the Protection of Crime Victims and Whistleblowers, which wil l— for the first time — combine support for crime victims with the protection of people reporting wrongdoing. The agenda on victim compensation will shift from the Justice Ministry to the new authority, which is set to begin operating in January 2026.
