Slovakia to Streamline Development and Humanitarian Aid Efforts

Slovakia is stepping up efforts to make its development and humanitarian aid more effective. Deputy Foreign Minister Rastislav Chovanec says the goal is better coordination across ministries and stronger use of EU financial tools. He spoke after chairing a meeting of the national Coordination Committee for Development Cooperation.

A new working group has been created to draft Slovakia’s first humanitarian strategy, as Chovanec says the current system from 2006 no longer reflects today’s crises and needs updating. Discussions also covered an OECD review of Slovakia’s development policies, new EU funding opportunities and ways to involve Slovak businesses in international projects. Slovakia pointed to recent successes in Ukraine programmes and EU-backed initiatives in Africa and the Balkans.
