President Met Italian PM in Rome and Unveiled Mosaic in Vatican

President Peter Pellegrini met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome on Friday to discuss global and European developments. During the briefing, Pellegrini praised Meloni’s leadership, noting that Italy is beginning to play a more prominent role in European politics under her guidance. Their meeting also addressed the situation in Ukraine and the issue of immobilised Russian assets.

According to the president, Slovakia views Italy as an ally—particularly on issues such as the Green Deal and the new European Emissions Trading System (ETS2). Pellegrini added that his talks with Meloni helped further strengthen relations between the two countries.

While in Italy, the Slovak president also attended the unveiling of a mosaic of Mary of the Seven Sorrows, the Patron Saint of Slovakia, in the Vatican Gardens. The artwork, created by Greek Catholic priest Kamil Dráb from Centro Arte in Stará Ľubovňa, is intended to symbolically deepen the spiritual ties between Slovakia and the Vatican.
