Hungary and Slovakia will launch proceedings at the European Court of Justice seeking to annul a planned European Union regulation that would ban imports of Russian energy resources. Brussels is expected to approve the measure—part of the REPowerEU initiative—as early as this week, with the ban set to take effect at the end of 2027. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced on social media that both countries will also request the suspension of the regulation while the case is being heard.
On Sunday, Szijjártó reiterated that prohibiting Russian energy imports would jeopardize the security of energy supplies for both Hungary and Slovakia and could trigger a sharp rise in prices.
