Interior Minister to Reject EU Migration Pact

On Monday, Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok (Hlas) departed for a meeting of EU interior ministers, where discussions are expected to focus on the Migration Pact, the solidarity fund, and the EU’s new asylum policy.

Šutaj Eštok stated that he is attending with Slovakia’s “sovereign position,” reiterating that the country rejects the EU Migration Pact. The minister stressed that Slovakia wants a safe and functioning Europe but called it “absurd” for European leaders to dictate whom Slovakia should accept.

“I refuse to accept people we know nothing about, who do not recognise our traditions and values, and who may pose a security risk to Slovakia,” he said.

The EU Migration Pact establishes a set of binding rules for managing migration within the Union and creates a common asylum system. It was adopted in 2024, with Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary voting against it.
