High energy prices are the biggest challenge currently facing European industry, and effective measures are needed to bring them down as production increasingly shifts to other continents, Slovak President Peter Pellegrini said on Wednesday at a summit of Visegrad Four (V4) heads of state in Esztergom, northern Hungary.
Pellegrini stressed that Visegrad cooperation remains highly valuable for Slovakia, noting that the four countries are able to discuss shared priorities even when their views differ. He added that the V4 can more effectively advocate for its interests on issues such as climate quotas, including debates over the gradual phase-out of petrol-powered cars. “We also need to develop military mobility, which is essential for the security of our citizens,” he said.
Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok described the V4 as a cornerstone of stability in Central Europe, emphasising that its members face many common challenges. “We’re more vulnerable on our own, but together we’re stronger,” he stated, underscoring the importance of pursuing joint solutions and highlighting the shared values that stem from centuries of coexistence among the four nations.
