PM Warns EU Engine Ban Would Harm Slovakia

Prime Minister Robert Fico (SMER-SD) says the EU’s planned 2035 ban on producing and selling cars with combustion engines would be harmful to Slovakia. He stressed that the country’s economy is deeply dependent on car manufacturing, with many suppliers linked to the sector.

Fico welcomed Germany’s call for the European Commission to rethink the ban and allow highly efficient hybrid engines beyond 2035. He warned that any major disruption to the auto industry would seriously affect Slovakia, especially as new investments — including a Volvo plant near Košice — are underway. Fico and Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár (SMER-SD) also voiced concern that the EU’s ETS2 emissions scheme could further raise energy and fuel prices from 2028.
