Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár (SMER-SD) met newly elected UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany in Bratislava on his first bilateral trip since taking office. Blanár said strengthening Slovakia’s engagement in UNESCO is a priority of the country’s foreign policy.
Both sides confirmed interest in deeper cooperation to support multilateralism, peace, and sustainable development. Blanár stressed that UNESCO is a key partner for modernising education, protecting cultural and natural heritage, and guiding the ethical use of new technologies. He also noted Slovakia’s active role as a member of UNESCO’s Executive Board for 2023–2027.
El-Enany highlighted UNESCO’s importance at a time of global conflicts, misinformation, and rising inequalities, urging member states to stay engaged and help keep the organisation effective and depoliticised.
