Slovakia and Austria Discuss Border Protection

Slovak Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok (HLAS-SD) and his Austrian counterpart Gerhard Karner have agreed on the need to adjust their approach to border protection. Meeting at the Jarovce–Kittsee crossing, they noted that illegal migration numbers have dropped sharply but stressed the importance of preventing future increases. They said borders must be protected not only at official checkpoints but across the entire border area on both sides.

The ministers also discussed the EU’s new Migration and Asylum Pact. They warned against what they called “false solidarity,” arguing it could encourage smugglers. Both countries support stronger protection of the Schengen external border, better return policies, and closer cooperation with third countries. They also discussed security challenges at home, including this year’s school attacks in Graz and Spišská Stará Ves, and stressed the need to tackle growing radicalisation in society.
