Slovakia Opens New R2 Section

Prime Minister Robert Fico and Transport Minister Jozef Ráž officially opened the new R2 highway section between Kriváň and Mýtna on Thursday the 20th of November. The nine-kilometer stretch includes Slovakia’s longest bridge, measuring over 4.3 kilometers, and is mostly elevated over challenging terrain. The highway will be tolled, with a speed limit of 130 km/h.

Fico emphasized the need to shift from budget consolidation to economic growth in 2026 and urged the transport ministry to implement ready infrastructure projects. Officials highlighted the advanced construction techniques used for the bridge, including a rare expansion joint method only previously used in the U.S. Construction faced challenges, including a large century-old landfill, which delayed the project and increased costs from €232 million to around €270 million. According to the Prime Minister the opening of R2 highways significantly improves connectivity in the Novohrad region, bringing the highway closer to Lučenec.
