The Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry and the National Forestry Centre (NLC) are currently launching a project to restore forests in Slovakia that will be resistant to climate change, Agriculture Minister Richard Takáč (Smer-SD) stated at a press conference on Tuesday, with NLC director general Ľuboš Halvoň in attendance.
The €36-million project is to be reimbursed from the recovery plan, but the work must be completed by June next year.
"I'm very pleased that the implementation of this project from the recovery plan has begun today. We'll rebuild forests in Slovakia through various agrotechnical forestry measures, planting, and other activities, converting part of the forest covers to mixed, more climate-resistant ones. We're going to do this and build for our future generations," said Takáč.
The Minister pointed out that the agricultural sector hadn't originally been allocated any money from the recovery plan. However, the new leadership of the Agriculture Ministry began working on this at the end of 2023, and as part of the plan's revision, they managed to secure €36 million for a project inspired by a similar project in the Czech Republic.
