The Jewish synagogue in Trenčín was reconsecrated on Sunday for the third time in its history, 77 years after the last ceremony. Rabbis brought Torah scrolls into the restored building, officially renewing it as a ritual space.
The synagogue, first consecrated in 1913 and again in 1948 by Holocaust survivors, has recently undergone extensive interior reconstruction. “The consecrated synagogue is once again a living space for dialogue, understanding, and tolerance,” said Olga Hodalová, chairwoman of the local Jewish community.
The date, November 9, was chosen to coincide with the anniversary of Kristallnacht in 1938. “Eighty-seven years later, the opposite is happening — the synagogue is filled not with flames, but with the light of understanding,” said Richard Duda, head of the Central Union of Jewish Religious Communities in Slovakia.
He added that the event carries a strong message for Slovakia and Europe, noting that it is the first and possibly the last synagogue in Slovakia to be reconsecrated in many years.
