Greenpeace: Slovakia’s Bear Policy Breaks EU Law

Greenpeace Poland has filed a complaint with the European Commission against Slovakia over what it calls the illegal culling of brown bears. The group says the Slovak government approved the killing of up to 350 bears without the required environmental assessment. Greenpeace warns the hunts near the Polish border threaten protected bears that cross between the two countries. Slovakia has already reported 180 bears killed this year. Environmentalists argue the cull won’t solve conflicts with humans and urge better prevention and education instead.
